“The only sustainable communities are those in which people know each other, care about each other, and take responsibility for each other.”

Belonging, Land, and the Future of Rural Communities

Rural Futures Network is a growing movement of neighbours, artists, farmers, organizers, storytellers, and community builders, working to strengthen sense of belonging, connection, ecological stewardship, and the ability for rural places to write their own story and shape their own future.

In times of fragmentation, polarization, and uncertainty, Rural Futures Network is an effort to strengthen connection, civic participation, imagination, and our collective power to support rural communities in shaping their own future.

Rooted in Place

Shaping what’s next.

Across Canada, many rural communities are experiencing:

  • social isolation

  • disappearing gathering spaces

  • increasing ecological pressures

  • loss of local culture and identity

  • economic extraction

  • growing disconnection from land and one another

But many rural places also carry deep strengths:

  • stewardship

  • creativity

  • resilience

  • interdependence

  • local knowledge

  • care for place

Rural Futures Network exists to help people reconnect to those strengths and to each other — to help create the relationships, trust, and participation that thriving communities depend on.

Coming soon:

The Rural Futures Assembly

The Rural Futures Assembly is a national gathering bringing together neighbours, artists, organizers, farmers, storytellers, and community builders to explore what thriving rural futures can look like together.

Through stories, conversation, music, and small-group dialogue, participants will reflect on the challenges and possibilities facing rural communities today and help launch local Rural Futures Circles across the country.

Together we’ll launch Rural Futures Facilitation Guide: a practical and creative resource for hosting gatherings, story circles, ecological mapping projects, arts events, and other community rooted gatherings that strengthen belonging, participation, and care for community.

This is the beginning of a growing network rooted in care for place, culture, stewardship, and collective imagination.
